Baptiste sending us that bottle left a bad taste in my mouth. He hadnât hit us up about working for him yet but I felt like a sitting duck. We were at his mercy, and I didnât like that feeling. As long as you were good to him Baptiste returned the favor but he didnât seem happy about Coop stepping on his toes. In the grand scheme of things the situation was small, Baptiste wasnât hurting about whatever money he lost if any. It was the principle of the situation.
Taking the stairs two at a time, I was about to head out to meet Coop. He didnât think it was a good idea to go see Baptiste but his logic is what got us in this shit in the first place. Coop was smart but the streets werenât in him. He was a ball player at heart and thatâs what he needed to focus on. Me on the other hand, I learned about the streets from my mom. Her addiction caused me to look at shit differently at a young age.
âWhat the fuck are you doing?â I snapped. My mom was sitting on the bathroom floor getting high out of her mind. She didnât even have the decency to shut the door.
âGet out! Canât a women have some privacy!â
âNot when youâre down here bassing up! Where did you get the money for this shit?!â I snapped, grabbing the drugs of her hand.
âDonât fuckin worry about it! Give me my shit.â At this point she was physically trying to attack me to get the drugs out of my hand. The only problem, Beverly was basically a midget. Shadeur got his height from his dad and I could only assume thatâs where mine came from too.
Shadeur and I didnât have the same father but his loved me like his own before he died. God rest his soul, Jarvis Perry, was as solid as they come. For a brief moment in time I knew what it was like to have a real family. My mom still struggled with her addiction but she was a lot more functional than she was now.
Jarvis loved her in spite of her flaws but he also didnât enable her or make excuses for the shit she did. Apparently thatâs what she needed because it worked until Jarvis was taken from us. His murder sucked the little life my mother had left out of her and she hadnât been the same since leaving me to be both mother and father to Shadeur.
âCalm the fuck down!â
âGive me my shit Meik! I need it!â
âWhat the fuck do you need this for?â
âYou wouldnât understand! Give it back!â
âEnlighten me.â I replied, grabbing her by the arm and throwing her down on the couch.
âI donât have to tell you shit. Iâm the fuckin parent here.â
âWhereâd you get the money for this? What did you sell this time?â I asked. She hadnât received another mysterious envelope in a while but here she was with drugs that I damn sure didnât pay for.
